rules for use

We have only a few rules, which we urge you to follow to reduce our work. Currently, we do not charge for daily entry or for our events or for use of our space as we believe in The UP Garden being an accessible place for all. We have no income, we survive off donations, and therefore we cannot pay volunteers for their time - all of them generous donate such time around their work, (child-)caring and other responsibilities. It is unfair for them to spend extra time dragging furniture back into place, hoisting out heavy bin bags, picking up hundreds of pieces of glitter/confetti, or sweeping gravel spread far and wide, especially as some of our volunteers are elderly or have health problems.
We simply ask that the space is kept in the same condition as we offer every morning - ready to be enjoyed by all.

Rules

Please:
-
Contact us if you are interested in hosting your event at The UP Garden - whilst we cannot guarantee that everyone will, so far people have been great about doing so, which means we can let you know about any clashing events. Similarly, please notify us if you decide not to go ahead so we can remove your event from our calendar;
-
Start after 9:30am and finish at least 30 minutes before our closing time (usually 6pm, reducing to 4pm in Daylight Savings Time), so as not to delay our volunteers who lock up. We respect our neighbours and their right to have peaceful evenings, as do our volunteers;
-
Check beforehand that everything is safe enough for your guests. Our volunteers do regular spot checks but someone may have visited in the interim and dropped some glass or let their dog have a poo, etc;
-
No open flames as there is lots of flammable material around The UP Garden!
-
No loud music, or anything else that's disrespectful to our near neighbours;
-
No confetti or glitter or similar, and remove any decorations you brought;
-
Clean up your mess (this includes sweeping back the gravel if your guests spread it around). Also, if you create waste that is over half a bin bag, please bring bin bags and take them away filled with you. Our bins are for every day litter, whereas we find that parties easily fill up our bins. Don't leave bin bags next to the bins as they get ripped open by animals;
-
Pets are allowed but must be on leads, and any messes cleaned up;
-
If you move furniture, put it back afterwards;
-
Let us know of any damage. We understand that accidents happen - we just need to know about it asap so we can make the space safe for visitors.
Please note that:
-
there is no running water and no toilet, but the Wild Goose Bakery is just a minute away for their customers, and The Holly Tree is 5 minutes away and on the community toilet scheme so no purchase necessary - check their opening hours for updates;
-
in the unlikely event you need it, there is a first aid box in the peach wooden shed in the far corner (it’s unlocked);
-
like other public spaces e.g. parks, playgrounds, etc, The UP Garden cannot be hired exclusively so other people might wander in. However, there is plenty of space for different groups to be in there at the same time.

If you used The UP Garden for your event, please consider donating to us to help with our overheads.
